When it comes to the China wholesale market, it is interesting to mention that some of the wholesale shopping websites are making huge revenues every year while they may not be widely known in the arena. In particular, three names are the best representatives: DinoDirect.com, DealExtreme.com and ChinaVasion.com. I have introduced some basic facts about Chinavasion in a previous post (See ChinaVasion Review), and here I would like to share my findings of DinoDirect.com.

 

Business Model

DinoDirect.com adopts a special business model. It looks like a transaction platform as you can find supplier information on the product description pages. However, the website handles orders through its own order processing system and keeps a number of warehouses in the United States, Canada and other countries or regions. I was stunningly impressed by its advanced warehouse management system – it’s hard to find another wholesale site that has the same good warehouses.

Offices, Warehouses, Brands & Products

Based on my knowledge, DinoDirect is owned by DinoDirect China Limited and has a head office in the Shenzhen – based on the latest report, the city’s foreign trade volume is the biggest in Chin this year. Besides, it has 10 branch offices in different countries and regions. The products sent to buyers are basically from its overseas warehouses.

If you are a regular shopper of AliExpress.com, you may have noticed that almost every category has a list of top sellers listed on the left navigation. These AliExpress top sellers are verified by AliExpress.com and rated basically in terms of positive feedback percentage, seller tier, sale volume, customer service and more. As such suppliers have a proven record of good reputation, trading with them is generally more hassle-free.

Based on my findings, the AliExpress Top Sellers have a positive customer feedback percentage as high as 100% — so far 93% seems to be the lowest standard among such suppliers. In addition, the top sellers usually have a much higher orders completed rate as well as a much bigger feedback quantity over the past 6 months.

In the store homepage of each store, you can find the product listing, top-selling products, feedback score, TrustPass Profile, About Us and Contact Details of the seller at the top navigation. When I was compiling the list of China wholesalers of electronic gadgets, I found Tmart.com. At first glance, Tmart.com looks no difference from other online electronic gadget stores. Anyway, the Nextage Seller mark displayed at the bottom of its homepage caught my attention. I did some research then, trying to dig out more valuable information about the shop. Here I would like to share my findings, though what I finally got is quite limited.

On the Tmart.com website, I noticed that no phone call information is indicated. Instead, I only found a Hong Kong mailing address. I asked one of their customer service representatives, the girl told me that their head office is indeed located in Hong Kong, but they have some warehouses across the world and their biggest warehouses are in the US, the UK and Hong Kong.

I believe Tmart does have warehouses in different countries and regions as the store provides worldwide free shipping. Based on my knowledge, many other China wholesale shopping websites of electronics or electronic gadgets do the same way: they cooperate with overseas warehouses to stock and deliver their goods while running their business through their websites and working at offices in the mainland China or Hong Kong, e.g. DinoDirect.com.

However, for their Hong Kong-headquartered part, I still have my doubts. At Tmart, you can use live chat or email to reach their customer service team, but you can’t find any phone call number. Besides, Google tells me that the company address is used by different companies. Anyway, I didn’t mean Tmart is probably a scammer. One of my Chinese friends registered her small firm in Hong Kong while doing business with her global customers in Shenzhen. I know she is a completely honest person and doing serious business. Many Chinese people choose to register their companies in Hong Kong simply to reduce all kinds of costs and to raise their customers’ confidence. After all, Hong Kong is an internationally famous city with high enterprise credibility. Tmart may be one of such companies. From my research, the Tmart office should be located in Fuzhou, Fujian Province of China – I am not quite sure though.

Days ago, Quji Guo, the CEO of Lightinthebox.com, confirmed the news in Sina Microblog (or Sina Weibo) that Lightinthebox had opened its domestic store of wedding apparel and accessories on Tmall.com, the famous shopping website with over 70,000 brands.

Tmall.com is a part of Taobao.com, the biggest online shopping website in China, connecting countless sellers and consumers. There you can find a huge variety of products offered by verified brands with intellectual property rights. From my personal angle, I believe Lightinthebox chooses Tmall to start its domestic trade for good reason. The huge customer base and the strong reputation of the brand shopping platform should be the biggest attractions for Lightinthebox. Compared with creating its own shopping website targeted at Chinese domestic customers, Lightinthebox may be able to raise its popularity on the domestic market more quickly and more easily.

It is interesting to mention that Lightinthebox chooses to open its first domestic store at its competitor AliExpress.com’s sister website – AliExpress and Tmall both belong to Alibaba Group. Based on my findings, currently the Lightinthebox Tmall store is run by the Shenzhen branch office of Lightinthebox.com, mainly offering high-end wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, party dresses and wedding accessories.

By comparison, I notice that the prices Lightinthebox Tmall store offers on the wedding dresses and party dresses are generally higher than market prices. For instance, the wedding dresses are priced at from ￥588RMB (about $100USD) to ￥3188RMB (about $500USD). But obviously, the wedding apparel and special occasion dresses available in the store seem much superior in designs and quality. That’s why I said the wedding dresses and other apparel and accessories are “high-end”.
